Clean Sheet Rankings Powered by Tableau Attacking Rankings Powered by Tableau Individual Rankings On a recent FanGraphs podcast, guest Dan Szymborski spoke briefly about the difference between projections and predictions. Szymborski is the creator of the ZiPS baseball projection system which uses a combination of historic data and minor league stats to project future production. The key point here for us is that Szymborski notes that he is keen to avoid having a computer model do things that a computer isn't very good at, such as judging whether a niggly knee injury will keep a player out or whether a manager gave a hint in his latest press conference that someone might be rotated. He therefore distinguishes between projections - which are computer generated and focus on factors we can quantify - and predictions which use those projections along with other factors that are best left to the human mind to factor. Given a few comments I have seen where the below ...

Injured/suspended players are generally excluded but borderline cases are left in and I make no assessment as to whether individual's will be rested/rotated.

Attacking Rankings Powered by Tableau Clean Sheet Rankings Powered by Tableau Individual Rankings Powered by Tableau A couple of quick notes on player rankings which will likely cause some consternation: At City, United are forecast to register just six SiB which gives van Persie a couple, based on his 36% share to date. On those numbers the model just isn't going to forecast big returns for the Dutchman this week. Ba's ranking over Berbatov looks a bit odd given that you would fancy the home team in the contest, but the ranking accounts for each player's share of their team's shots to date, and Ba simply dominates in that metric (53% SiB vs 26% for Berbatov). Berbatov's assist potential makes it close and the risk that Ba doesn't play would likely make me pick the Bulgarian here, but the model doesn't account for injuries. The Reading players get the edge of Sunderland due to the other game, as while the model likes the extra fi...

Team Attacking Forecast Powered by Tableau Team Defensive Forecast Powered by Tableau Individual Player Forecast Powered by Tableau In anticipation of the inevitable "why do you hate van Persie" questions, I thought I better add a quick note on his unexpectedly low ranking here. Powered by Tableau The key difference the model sees between van Persie and Rooney is simply the percentage of United's chances he has accounted for when playing. Rooney sits at 29% in home games while van Persie comes in with a useful 20%, which based on United's forecast 14 SiB gives Rooney a forecast 1.3 shot advantage. Rooney also enjoys a distinct advantage in SoB, though given the low likelihood of those turning into goals, that doesn't have a huge impact. This all translates to a relatively slim, but not insignificant, 1.4 point lead and thus likely some scorn for these electronic pages. If I'm honest, if I owned both players and hadn...
