Stockpiling weapons at Arsenal

A few readers, along with 23% of all fantasy players have been speculating of late over the virtues of Samir Nasri and while he is indeed having a fine season (67 points, 0.714 aPPMS, 86 aPoints) I am not totally convinced that his fantasy future is as bright.

The closest Arsenal have come this year to a full strength side was probably GW5 against Sunderland. That day, Wenger lined up with Song and Wilshere as the holding pair, Arshavin and Nari as the wider forwards, Fabregas in an advanced role and Chamakh up front. Sounds okay so far, however, now bring in Van Persie, one of Arsenal's best players and an every week starter and I have an issue:

"We can play Chamakh and Van Persie together. We can play Chamakh up front and van Persie behind . . . What is interesting is we can play all kinds of formations with the two." (Wenger)

So if Van Persie will play; who won't? Let's start with the central pairing. This season Wenger has gone with following pairs:

  • Wilshere / Song x 9
  • Song / Denilson x 3
  • Wilshere / Eboue x 1
  • Song / Diaby x 1
  • Eboue / Song x 1
With perhaps the exception of Diaby, all those players are defense first and I therefore find it hard to believe that Wenger will suddenly ditch this philosophy and put Fabregas in here alongside someone like Song or Wilshere. If he does then this is the end of Fabregas as a fantasy force as this group of players have managed just 5 goals in 44 appearances and only Song - who costs less than half the price of Fabregas - could be considered even close to a fantasy factor.

If you accept this then you will see why I fear for Nasri. We have four spots left and we need to fit in Fabregas (Arsenal's best player and captain), Van Persie (their best all round forward), Chamakh (their top scorer this season and newest arrival), Arshavin (their record signing) and then Nasri, Walcott and Rosicky. As noted above, Wenger has stated that he wants to play Van Persie behind Chamakh so Nasri's only real shot is to take over from Arshavin. Even if this happened it is a stretch to think his minutes would be more than 60% of those on offer given the wealth of alternatives available for selection.

I really like Nasri as a player and I've been a big fan of his work this year but as many of us have learned (again) with the likes of O'Shea, Bosingwa and Milner, talent alone cannot overcome a lack of playing time and so guaranteed (or at least predictable) minutes are still an important factor when selecting a fantasy team.

Now, in the short term Nasri should be okay as Fabregas is injured and won't be rushed back. However, they're talking about him possibly playing in GW17 against United so the crunch could happen as soon as two weeks away which makes Nasri a huge risk to buy right now. If my analysis is correct then 23% of people are going to get spooked very quickly and his price could fall fairly quickly.

My thoughts exactly. I worry that Van Persie's inclusion will reduce Nasri's playing time as well as his influence on the game with Van P playing in the hole. Was considering doing Van Der Vaart to Nasri but I don't know anymore

Glad I didn't let you talk me out of Nasri (for the time being)! I am really finding it hard to believe that Arshavin will be staying first choice ahead of Nasri with the form Nasri has been in lately.

yea i dont see nasri dropping to bench given his current form. Like wenger is trying to fit chamakh and van persie together by shifting formation, i predict that he will try to fit nasri in the mix.
In addition, i am afraid that there will be very limited number of games that fabregas and van persie play togethre due to fitness issue of their own lol

Hi Chris,

I'm not convinced by this theory, IF Van Persie and Chamakh are both really going to play together then Wilshere will be dropped and Nasri will play on the wing (with arshavin on the other wing and fab and song in the middle with VP just ahead of them), simple.

(Alternatively Wenger will come to his senses and drop Chamakh who is very clearly the one of the 6 players with the least ability).

p.s. Also sorry to be annoying but your less independent readers are still waiting for that Chelsea clean sheet! In fact its now been 6 league games out of 7 they haven't managed it, and the hard games are just beginning.
