The official game price list is out and it makes for some interesting reading. Before delving too much into strategy I thought I'd throw out a few names of players who jump off the page as being potential bargains or players I like better than those for the same value:

Keepers are valuable in the game given their extra two points for clean sheets and so I think it's worth paying extra for a premium guy. Strikers probably have slightly more value that midfielders as all players score 5 points for a goal regardless of position. However, I think that the position falls off quickly and so I will load up on two or even three top guys and go for the mid range midfield option (not unlike my favourite EPL tactic for the past season).

As for the somewhat unique transfer system, my idea right now is to play high risk-high reward guys from the start (say, Lennon, Suarez, or Pienaar) and hold a stud on the bench to bring in for whichever of those guys turns out to be a bust (Spain, Brazil and Chile work well for this). Of course to do that you will need a deep squad which will mean that you not be able to get 4 or 5 top line guys. It will be tough to balance your squad but I do think you should have at least two 1.0m players as the chance of needing your entire squad is small and the money saved can be better used elsewhere.

I'm guessing my squad will change something like 3,451,763 times before Friday so why not post your ideas below or @plfantasy and we'll see if we can get some consensus sleepers/studs for our squads.

Can someone explain the substitutions to me please? I've read the rules several times but I don't quite have a grasp on subs yet.

Can I make daily substitutions even after a player has played?

The way I read it, you pick your team 1-11 before the round deadline. Say on the first day or two (ie Friday and Saturday) players 3, 7 and 9 play. If player 3, say Ashley Cole, has a lousy game you can sub in anyone who is yet to play at his position, say Carlos Puyol.

I see the strategic way to play this is to set your lineup based on who plays earliest and then bring in your stars for whoever had the weakest game.

This makes Spain and Brazil players very valuable as you can set your lineup with Kaka on the bench and then bring him in before he plays on the final day of round 1 for whichever midfielder played worst.

As I said, the problem is that you will need a deep squad to pull this off so you will sacrifice how many stars you have. I think I will be using this strategy though.

Did anyone read the rules differently? I wouldn't say I'm 100% that the above is true.

Also you can captain a new person everyday until you get a decent points haul (unless your current captain gets a red).

A brief update

Happy holidays everyone; it's been a while. For those not on Twitter, I was away in Costa Rica over the break without much - if any - internet access hence the lack of posts around these electronic pages. Well, actually, that's only the main reason, not the only one. In truth I've become a bit disillusioned with the fantasy game the past couple of months, partly due to my other commitments which make copying data at 2am somewhat less appealing, partly due to a lack of excitement in this year's game and finally due to the constant frustration I have with today's internet culture. I try not to get involved in too much "will-he-won't-he" speculation in these pages with, for example, the weekly statistical rankings being provided regardless of rotation risk. I'm not saying, of course, that this shouldn't be a factor, only that I'm in no position to offer a worthwhile opinion, other than collating other news stories (which are often based on nonsense quotes from managers anyway).
